6 Tips and Tricks to Master Challenging Desserts

Desserts are known to elevate the dining experience after a yummy meal—but making them is a whole different ball game. By now, you might have perfected the easy-peasy desserts like the ref cake, and even the fruit salad so why not try more ambitious ones? Not only are you serving new desserts for your family to try but also elevating your dessert making skills along the way.

Take crème brulee, for example. This dessert takes around three hours to make, with a lot of timing and balancing of ingredients. However, if you got it right, it tastes heavenly and makes you feel the satisfaction of being able to pull off this kind of dessert! In other cases, you may find yourself needing fancy equipment, struggling to follow the steps, or using unusual ingredients.

In the kitchen, learning something new is half the fun! If you want to master desserts, here are some tips to keep in mind so you can conquer the kitchen. (Plus, a bonus recipe you can try in the end!)

  1. Absorb the recipe

For starters, take the time to read and review what you’re about to do. There could be a lot going on in the recipe you’re about to follow. Much like the main course, you might have to prepare some ingredients in advance or use them immediately after opening the packaging.

  1. Keep your ingredients measured and accurate

Unless you’re already familiar with what the finished product tastes like and want to make your own modifications, it’s a good idea to measure your ingredients and stick to a recipe that works. You won’t get what you want out of your dish if it’s either too sweet or too bland.

  1. Value contrast between flavor and texture

When making your dessert, consider the contrast between the flavor and texture of your dish. You can create something crunchy yet crisp and refreshing to the tongue or something smooth and fluffy yet rich in flavor. This makes the whole experience of eating dessert all the more fun!

  1. Enhance flavor by adding new but complementary ingredients

Learn more about ingredients that can help enhance the flavor of your dish to improve the dessert further. For instance, a sprinkle of sea salt can make other ingredients in your dessert pop, or adding espresso to a cocoa-based dessert can make it taste more chocolatey.

  1. Explore other ways to whip cream

Topping desserts with whipped cream is a staple to achieve a creamy and delightful taste. If you don’t have a mixer in your kitchen, there are three simple ways: use a whisk, or a coffee press, or a mason jar. Watch this tutorial for more detailed instructions.

  1. Add fruits

Who says desserts can’t be healthy? Since fruits have naturally occurring sugars in them, some of the best (and most complicated) dessert dishes feature fruits—and they’re all yummy! Strawberries, mangoes, bananas, and apples are just some of the most popular fruits that usually are roped into delicious dessert recipes.
